Zinedine Zidane claims that Real Madrid could make a major difference to the squad on transfer deadline day. The Los Blancos are still in the race to sign players ahead of the deadline day and the club are targeting some big names like Paul Pogba and Neymar.
Real Madrid have had a disappointing start to the season with the club already dropping points. There are several off-field issues and it is not helped by Zidane reportedly falling out with president Florentino Perez over intrusion in the club’s transfer policy. Zidane wanted Gareth Bale out of the club before the end of the window, but Perez reportedly made a last-ditch change in mind to keep the Welshman at the club even when a move to China was very close.
The summer has witnessed extravagant expenditure from Madrid. The likes of Eden Hazard have been able to replenish the squad with ‘galatico’ level quality. The club may have spent €300 million in revamping the squad, but early results have not been good. The draw with Villarreal has left the club with more questions than answers. Speaking to Goal, Zidane said:
“We will see until Monday at 12pm. Anything can happen. A bomb, two bombs…. We will see.”
Ironically, it was Gareth Bale who came to the rescue for the Los Blancos against the Yellow Submarines. Zidane wants a powerful personality in the squad before the end of the window.
Paul Pogba has been a player on his wish list for several years. The Manchester United midfielder was keen on a move away from Old Trafford, but it is highly unlikely that the Red Devils will accept an offer considering that a replacement cannot be brought in. The Premier League transfer window closed several weeks ago unlike the schedule for the European teams.
Pogba is a player who would have added steel, strength, and dynamism to the Madrid midfield. There is a greater need to revamp the central midfield positions with Luka Modric coming to the twilight of his career. However, Pogba would have cost a large sum of money even if he has openly expressed his interest to leave the club. The former Juventus man has been of interest to Madrid even during his days at Turin. His contract runs out in the summer of 2021 and Perez may actually be thinking about making a deal for the midfielder next summer when his value will drop considerably.
Meanwhile, Neymar is angling towards a move to Barcelona and it is expected that the Brazilian may end up staying at the Parc des Princes simply because Barcelona have been unable to agree a deal with PSG. Madrid tried to get into the picture with a string of offers, which largely included players and a small amount of cash, in order to entice the 27-year-old to move to the Santiago Bernabeu. However, such attempts have been in vain, as they have not done enough to convince the club or the player to take up the deal.
Even then, Zidane is confident about making a big signing on this transfer deadline day. Madrid quickly need an impetus to boost morale within the dressing room.
